The 54th Annual Scientific Congress of the Korean Association of Orthodontists (KAO) & The 12th World Implant Orthodontic Conference (WIOC)’ was successfully held from 14th to 17th October 2021 in a hybrid manner. Despite the Covid 19 situation, more than 2500 delegates including 245 foreign participants registered for this event, making it the highest record in the WIOC history.

The theme of the congress was ‘Facing new ideas, expanding possibilities: the value of anchorage to deal with contemporary orthodontic trends’. Many leading lecturers including 20 international speakers from 9 countries were invited for this event. Due to the restricted overseas travel, international speakers and registrants could only participate via the online platform. For domestic members, however, onsite scientific program proceeded satisfactorily following the government’s quarantine guideline in the COEX convention and exhibition center in Seoul, Korea. All domestic speakers lectured in-person. This hybrid approach was highly appreciated by all attendees and other societies.

Sixty companies with 225 booths participated in displaying up-to-date orthodontic devices and materials in the exhibition hall. Virtual screens were set to provide real-time lecture transmission for participants to attend lectures in exhibition hall as well. Moreover, mobile congress homepage – MyKAO – was provided to check status of continuing education and stamp tour with exhibitors and to prevent close contact with each other. These efforts was piloted as a new standard for international congress in the current COVID-19 situation.

Dr. Kyung-Ho Kim, the President of KAO said, “I deeply appreciate all the KAO members in attendance to make this KAO meeting successful and fruitful. This will be a great opportunity for the KAO to leap one step further as a leading association of orthodontists.”
