Greetings to all Orthodontists of the APOS region!
We are delighted to share some key highlights from the recent 29th Malaysian Association of Orthodontists (MAO) International Scientific Conference and Trade Exhibition themed “Bedfellows in Orthodontics”, which took place in Kuching, Sarawak from October 6th -9th 2023. This Conference brought together 184 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, South Korea, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The conference featured a stellar line up of speakers both from the international and local arena, who shared their expertise and insights on various aspects of orthodontics. Their talks covered cutting-edge research, innovative techniques, and the future of orthodontics. Attendees gained valuable current knowledge and were able to engage these speakers in a friendly atmosphere to catch up or exchange ideas and opinions on matters affecting the profession.
Trade and Exhibition Show
A trade and exhibition area featured the latest orthodontic product and services. Participants had the opportunity to explore innovative tools, materials and technology that can improve patient care and practice efficiency. Also included in the trade and exhibition, were local traders to promote an array of local handicraft and delicacies.
Presentations, Awards & Recognition
At this conference too, the MAO conducted a series of Orthodontic Scientific Research Presentation which included a free communication session and poster presentations alongside an Orthodontic Health Promotion Competition. Individuals with outstanding research, infographic posters and video presentations were acknowledged with awards. The MAO also presented the well earned lifetime membership award during this prestigious occasion to Dr Ahmad Burhanuddin and Dr Kok Yin Fun. The MAO was privileged to have Dr Roberto Tan, the President of Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS) grace our event which made it a more prestigious and memorable one for our orthodontic calendar.
The Conference provided a platform for delegates to network, share experiences and forge new connections within the orthodontic community. Social events bolstered the interactions and acted to further foster ties with one another.
Gala dinner with the Deputy Premiere of Sarawak “Borneon Rhapsody”
One of the most anticipated events during the conference was the Gala Dinner where Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy premier, Minister For Public Health, Housing and Local Government graced the occasion. It was an evening of elegance and prestige, celebrating the achievements of the orthodontic community. The presence of the Deputy Premiere added further honour to the event, emphasizing the importance of orthodontics in the region
To provide a unique and memorable experience for all delegates, the conference included an informal night onboard the Royal Kuching Cruise. The serene cruise allowed attendees to unwind, relax and soak in the views along the Sarawak River. Participants also enjoyed cultural dance performances and were able to indulge in some karaoke singing while aboard. This was a delightful interlude in the midst of a knowledge centred conference
As the conference drew to a close, we bid farewell to our keynote speaker Professor Jonathan Sandy as he goes into retirement. It was a wonderful 4 day event and the 29th MAOISCTE themed ‘Bedfellows in Orthodontics’ was a resounding success, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and innovation within the orthodontic community. The Gala Dinner and the Sarawak Royal Cruise added a touch of elegance and relaxation to the event.
